Poores and Poors who Served in the Revolutionary War

 

Enoch Poor, Brigadier General

Enoch Poor was born on June 21, 1736, in Andover, Massachusetts, died September 8, 1780, in Hackensack, New Jersey. He was a descendent of Daniel Poore. Before the war, he was a shipbuilder in Exeter, New Hampshire. At the outbreak of the war, he raised a regiment, and was commisioned a Colonel, on May 23, 1775. After the British evacuated Boston, Colonel Poor was sent to New York. In 1776, he went with Arnold into Canada. Poor was returned to the command of the 2nd New Hampshire Regiment in November, 1776. He was promoted to Brigadier General the next year. He led the advance at the Battle of Saratoga, and then joined Washington in Valley Forge. General Poor fought under Lafayette through the New Jersey campaigns, and distinguished himself at Monmouth. In 1780, he died in Hackensack, NJ, from "putrid fever." Lafayette and Washington both attended his funeral.

Thomas Poor, Colonel

Thomas Poor was born on July 19, 1732, in Andover, Massachusetts, and died in 1804, in Methuen, MA. He was an older brother of General Enoch Poor. He served as a Captain at the Lexington Alarm, and then a major in Frye's division. He was rapidly promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, and then Colonel in 1778. He led a regiment in the Massachusetts Militia.

Joseph Poore, Captain

Joseph Poore was born on August 24, 1737, in Rowley, Massachusetts, and died on Februaru 18, 1795 in Byfield, Massachusetts. He was a descendent of John Poore. He was commisioned a private in 1775, and promoted to Captain when he led a company from Byfield to Cambridge at the Lexington Alarm.

Jeremiah Poor, Captain

Jeremiah Poor was born on October 31, 1747, in Plaistow, New Hampshire, and died in 1811, in Atkinson, New Hampshire. He was a descendent of Daniel Poore. He enlisted as a sergeant, and was promoted to Captain in the New Hampshire Militia.

Jonathan Poore, Captain

Jonathan Poore was born on January 20, 1736/37, in Newbury, Massachusetts, and he died March 19, 1807, in Newbury. A descendent of John Poore, he lived in the original house of the settler, and used it is a tavern. From the tavern, he help recruit people for the war effort. He responded to the Lexington Alarm, and raised a company of men from Newbury.

David Poore, Lieutenant

David Poore was born in 1737, at Sudburym MA, and died in 1816, in at Winchendon, MA. He was a descendent of John Poore. He was commisioned a Lieutenant at the Lexington Alarm.

Peter Poor, 1st Lieutenant

Peter Poor was a descendent of Daniel Poore. He lived in Andover. He raised a company at the Lexington Alarm, and marched to Cambridge.

Abraham Poor, 2nd Lieutenant

Abraham Poor was born at Andover in 1741/42 and died in 1819, in Ogdensburg, NY. He was a 2nd Lieutenant in Captain Ballard's company, in the regiment of Colonel James Frye.

Samuel Poor, Sergeant

Samuel Poor was born in 1758, in Rowley, MA, the son of the afore mention Captain Joseph Poor. Samuel enlisted as a private and served under Colonels Francis, Johnson, Gerrish and Wadsworth. He died in 1841, in Hookset, New Hampshire.

David Poor, Corporal

David Poor was born in 1748, in Rowley, MA, a descendent of John Poore. He was a minute man at the Lexington Alarm, and served under Captain Mighill. He died in 1817, in Rowley.

Peter Poor, Private

He was from Andover, and a descendent of Daniel Poore. Either him, or the above Peter, was the son of Peter Poor, b.1730, and Sarah Wood. Private Peter is more likely, as his name as given as Peter, Jr. in the records. He served under Thomas Poor, and marched to Cambridge at the Alarm. There is yet another Peter Poor who served in the revolution, but he was probably Peter Power.

Daniel Poore, Private

Daniel Poore was born in 1716, in Newbury, a descendent of John Poore. I can't find much more on his military career than "he was a patriot who gave services." He died 1792, probably in Newbury.

Joseph Poor, Private

Joseph Poor was a descendent of Daniel Poore, born 1748 in Andover, MA. He fought under Kent and Newell, defending the seacoast. He died in 1815, in Danvers.

Eliphalet Poor, Private

Eliphalet Poor was born in 1746/47 in Newbury, MA. He served under Jacob Gerrish as a minute man at the Lexington Alarm. He is a descendent of John Poore.
